Listen I know it’s been a long hiatus in between episodes one and two of this series but life gets in the way sometimes and I don’t get paid to do this. But hey, Tuukka Rask is officially back in net tonight for the Bruins and that was more than enough to snap me out of silence.
When Tuukka talked about the severity of his injury and just how much pain he was playing through, the internet trolls came crawling out from under their bridges and accused him of stealing the limelight from Jeremy Swayman and delaying the start of his career. This of course coming from people who have no idea what it’s like to play in a Stanley Cup postseason run (myself included but we’re ignoring that fact), along with the desire to play for a chance to win it. As hockey fans, we praise these guys any chance we get when we find out they were playing through insane injuries because they’re “hockey tough”, but because Tuukka Rask is one of the most scrutinized players in Boston sports history, he’s screwing his team over. Makes sense.
That being said, Swayman will get more time to fine tune his game in Providence without having to clear waivers, he’ll get a much needed confidence boost (no that he was necessarily playing poorly, but a little time in the minors rarely hurts a goaltender). Don Sweeney was quick to point out to everyone just how stellar Swayman’s mindset was the moment he was told he’d have to go down to the AHL for a stint, which should be a relief to all of Bruins nation.
Well, since the start of the new year the Bruins are 6-1, are outscoring their opponents 33-16, and are climbing their way back up in the Atlantic Division sitting in 4th just five points behind Toronto. Even in the face of a few injuries and guys going into Covid protocols, the Bruins have seemingly found a rhythm, and finally found secondary scoring.
Finally, trade rumors are flying around, the Bruins are very short at the blue line, no we’re not signing Evander Kane, and we can’t forget that DeBrusk requested a trade. If Sweeney plays this wisely, the Bruins could very well be set up for a decent playoff push.
