Did the Revolution make history this season? Yes. Is their job done? Not even close. In fact, it’s just starting right now. Everyone knows that the regular season results truly do not mean anything entering into the postseason. As we’ve seen in extremely recent memory, anyone can beat anyone in the postseason, it only takes one mental mistake. I don’t even need to reference the Revs beating last year’s Supporters Shield winning Philadelphia Union and ending their MLS Cup title run, but then again I just did so whatever.
73 points, 14 different goal scorers, a goalkeeper and coach of the year finalist, along with a league MVP contender… this club did something special this season, and it can’t get said enough. That being said, the Revolution lost their regular season finale to Inter Miami CF 1-0 at home, and it cast a glaring light on the fact that this Revs squad, as dominant as they’ve been all year, are beatable, and I think that was an important lesson to learn heading into the MLS Cup Playoffs.
There’s two important things to note here. The first thing is, the Revs will face either New York City FC who had this year’s Golden Boot winner Valentín Castellanos and gave New England a fairly difficult time this season, or they’ll face Atlanta United, and we all know what they’re capable of when they get hot… which they quickly are becoming. That’s the first thing. The second thing is, they will face NYCFC or Atlanta United after a first round bye, which will mean, including the international break, the Revs will have gone just over three weeks between playing a competitive match. That, for those who don’t know, is hard to do. The Revolution have certainly dealt with adversity this season and have come out on top more often than not, but this will without a doubt be the ultimate test for this group.
Are they capable of tying the bow on this season? Of course. I feel like I should feel way more comfortable about the Revs postseason chances right now, but looking at what happened last year mixed with the club’s interesting decision to release the new branding now… I’ll be holding my breath the entire time.
