With the Seattle Kraken’s pick of Jeremy Lauzon in the expansion draft, the Bruins blue line is looking… well, small. Boston has already lost Kevan Miller to injuries (well, he retired but we know why) and Steven Kampfer announced that he was leaving for the KHL. The Bruins defense lost some size and ferocity to say the least. With free agency in full swing, Don Sweeney needs to make some moves on defense, and fast.
Sweeney’s offseason has just recently commenced with the signing of Taylor Hall to a four-year 6 million dollar contract, but if that’s the only big move up his sleeve, we’re in for a rough 2021-2022 season.
I’ve left out the fact that as of now, Tuukka Rask has yet to get surgery for his torn labrum (which the recovery for is no joke, and he’s still technically an unrestricted free agent), David Krejci has yet to publicly state what he’s thinking, and Jaroslav Halak has announced that he will not be returning to Boston.
I feel like there’s more going on in this offseason than Bruins fans may realize. At this moment, Jeremy Swayman and Dan Vladar are your goaltenders, Matt Grzelcyk is your starting left defenseman, and the final puzzle piece to David Krejci’s second line woes may not have a David Krejci to play alongside at all.
Overall the Bruins are not in bad shape, but they’re definitely not as deep as they were heading into last season, and as we all know, depth is truly the key for an 82 game season, and especially the postseason.
Whatever happens in the next three months is going to raise some eyebrows for sure. Buckle in Bruins fans.
