No more Mookie Betts, no more Brock Holt, no more David Price… what should we even realistically expect from the 2020 Boston Red Sox? Well, let’s look at what the Sox still have remaining, which, in hindsight still isn’t terrible. Devers, Bogaerts, Chavis, Benintendi, J.D., JBJ (for the time being), Vázquez, and now Kevin Pillar. Excluding the pitching staff, that’s a decent core of players capable of doing damage pending they stay relatively healthy.
The pitching staff is an entirely different issue that the new-and-sort-of-improved front office has seemingly yet to deal with or address. This is arguably one of the main causes of last years dumpster fire season: a lack of depth in the pitching rotation, and no certified closer, a position that has been wildly magnified in the recent years.
Interim manager Ron Roenicke has some serious work cut out for him, not only dealing with pulling together a clubhouse that’s seen some big personalities leave, but in finding a way to bounce back from an abysmal 2019 season, and with finding ways to win consistently in 2020 keeping in mind that injuries and slumps are inevitable.
I have yet to doubt the likes and competency of new CBO Chaim Bloom. No pitch has been thrown, no bat has been swung. If the Red Sox can find ways to win with what they have, and players like Alex Verdugo can get healthy, produce, and prove the media wrong, I will continue to have faith in Bloom.
The big questions still remain: will the Red Sox be punished for their alleged antics in 2018? How severe will the punishment be? Will we see Alex Cora back as the manager in 2021? New information comes out every day, and I think it’s too soon to tell.
