Wouldn’t You Know It, The Revs Are Fun To Watch Again

11 games unbeaten? Yeah, I’ll take that. Currently sitting in a playoff spot 6 points behind the leader in the east? I’ll take that too. Was there anyone at all who doubted Bruce Arena’s capabilities when he was hired as head coach? No I didn’t think so either. The Revolution’s last loss came against Orlando City in the Open Cup 2-1. In the games since the Open Cup, the Revs have outscored their opponents 17-6 with two clean sheets. I don’t credit that just with the great defensive work New England has provided, but Matt Turner has been nothing short of astounding in net as well.
The additions of Carles Gil and Gustavo Bou have clearly and immediately paid dividends for New England. From the moment the two stepped on to the pitch together, the telepathy and chemistry flourished. Along with that connection, Teal Bunbury’s play has returned to his full potential, and continues to contribute in obvious ways with excellent hold-up play, speed, and goals.
As a longtime Revs fan, it is odd to see players like Diego Fagundez, Scott Caldwell, Juan Agudelo or Brad Knighton not in the starting lineup or regular rotation. However, as I always say, if you’re winning, keep doing what’s working, and keep playing the guys who contribute.
The Revolution, at long last, look like a team that’s able to possess the ball confidently, defend as a group, attack with pace, and finish critical balls, and I accredit that all to Bruce Arena. For the last several seasons, New England has had incredibly high caliber players that have been stunted by bad coaching. Finally they have a coach that can play each player to their strengths and utilize a team-first mentality.
If this style of play keeps up, and the inevitable bumps in the road don’t cause the house of cards to fall apart, then these Revs could make a very serious run in the playoffs.
