Breaking Down The Bruins: Article 2

Let’s start with addressing this super convenient injury bug that keeps plaguing the Bruins. McAvoy has been dealing with his concussion issues for months now, and there isn’t exactly a time table for his return, which sucks, but you really can’t mess around with concussions, so I can’t blame Cassidy and the training staff for being cautious with that. Bergeron, the toughest hockey player in the world, is out for at least another three weeks with a rib and shoulder injury after being (quite savagely) edged into the boards against a Dallas Stars team that seemed to be targeting Boston’s star players all game. Zdeno Chara is out still with a lower body injury. Right after coming back from a broken hand, Kevan Miller will be out for the foreseeable future after taking a puck to the neck. On a positive note, the Bruins finally got back defenseman Brandon Carlo, who is a much needed presence on a blue line that, understandably, has had some trouble finding a rhythm.
Now about this goaltending situation. It still seems like Jaroslav Halak has been the best offseason acquisition for the Bruins thus far. He is currently tied for 4th in the league with a 2.25 GAA, 2nd in the league with a .932 SV%, and tied for 3rd in the league with two shutouts. That’s how you make a name for yourself with a new team and a new city. On the other hand, it seems like Tuukka Rask is relatively back to his normal self. After an abysmal start, he’s currently holding a 2.59 GAA and a .915 SV%. I think once the health of the blue line returns to normal, those numbers will continue to rise.
David Pastrnak is having himself an all-star caliber season with 19 goals and 11 assists. It still seems like the bulk of the Bruins production is coming from their veteran players. But guys like Debrusk and Donato are starting to contribute more and more each time they step on the ice. Bruce Cassidy is beginning to find line combinations that work.
All of these things considered, the Bruins have fared pretty well. They currently sit 4th in a very tightly contested Atlantic Division, and 13th in the entire league with a 14-9-4 record, giving them 32 points thus far.
