What Tragedies Like The Humboldt Broncos Do To The Sports World

It’s hard to fathom being the family members and friends of those players and coaches of the Humboldt Broncos junior ice hockey team. When 15 lives get taken too soon from this earth, it can do one of two things to a community, often it does both; it can shatter it, or it can bring it closer and make it stronger than ever.
The sports world is a unique one. It doesn’t matter which sport you play, what’s universally understood is camaraderie and dedication are the two core values in any successful organization, and they’re the two values that can’t be taught or coached.
The immediate tremendous amount of support that poured in from all corners of the globe were nothing short of breathtaking. It brings a tear to the eyes of anyone who knows what it’s like to be a band of brothers or sisters bonding over six, seven, eight hour bus rides. Nobody on that Humboldt Broncos bus was a teammate, because they were all brothers.
As the PA announcer for the Calgary Flames appropriately said before a moment of silence honoring the Broncos, “You don’t play for the name on the back of your jersey, you play for the crest on the front.”
The sports world has a special ability to come together in times of tragedy to bring monumental amounts of support to those who need it most, in a way that not many others can do. It gives hope to those who have doubt. It gives support to those who need to be supported. It gives love to those who feel lost, and it gives inspiration to those who don’t believe in themselves.
