Gianluigi (Gigi) Buffon is showing no signs of slowing down at the age of 39. The Italian goalkeeper has been playing absolutely stellar soccer for his club, Juventus. In UEFA Champions League (UCL) play, he has allowed only three goals, the fewest by any goalkeeper to reach the finals in UCL play. Buffon also has seven clean sheets to his name in the tournament, 20 in all competitions this season.
Playing at this level of excellence is no new occurrence for Gigi Buffon; he has made UEFA’s team of the year in 2003, 2004, and 2006, along with being nominated another four times: in 2002, 2005, 2012. and 2014. Buffon is a World Cup winner (’06), 7X Italian champion, 4X Italian Cup winner, 6X Italian Super Cup winner, UEFA Cup winner, European U-21 Champion, and an Italienischer Zweitligameister winner.
The 2017 Champions League Final is scheduled for November 30th at 2:45pm against the La Liga behemoth, Cristiano Ronaldo and company’s Real Madrid. Will Buffon’s heroics continue to stifle forwards? Or will Ronaldo and co. find a way past the Italian legend?
